Custom White Oak Dining Table

Custom White Oak Dining Table

After 10 years, I decided it was time for a new dining room table. I scoured the internet through a “google image search” to find a replica of a Williams and Sonoma table and much more afforable price than the whopping $5k price tag- and finally settled for a knock-off from an off brand on the internet. Received the ship date- sold my previous dining set a few days prior to the scheduled delivery date- and to my original dismay the table delivery was canceled exactly 24 hours after my old set was carted away. Backordered for 6 months, it left me in a predicament for hosting the upcoming holidays.

That’s when I reached out to my good friend Darren DuVall of DuVall Construction.

Boy did this turn out to be the best cancellation ever.

Local to Orange County, NY (about 75 miles north of New York City), Darren’s been in the construction world for his entire career, as a designer for Brattesani Kitchens, we’ve worked with him on many home renovation projects throughout the years. He builds many custom tables for his clients on the side and recently he started DRD Woodworks- where he builds custom furniture, built-ins, etc, out of his woodworking shop in Montgomery, NY.

My inspiration was not the original table itself that I had ordered- but rather a white oak coffee table in the adjacent sitting room that I had scored at a clearance sale via West Elm a few years back.

Inspiration ^

Darren and I worked together to design the table: final measurements 8’ by 3’ and after he gave me a sample of the white oak- I went to work with minwax stain combinations to figure out the best stain to compliment the wood tones in my house. It turned out to be a combination of Aged Barrel and Ebony stain- for the final finish which he named the “Babs Finish”. I could not be more in love with how it came out.

Details:

Wood Source: Ghent Wood Products, White Oak

Stain: Ebony + Aged Barrel by Minwax custom combo

Poly: Hand applied, multiple coats

Brackets on the underside: I was pretty impressed on the lack of visibility of the table brackets. Here are some photos of the building of the table from start to finish:

I absolutely love how it turned out. It’s one of a kind- fits the aesthetic I was going for perfectly and will truly last a lifetime. Thank god the previous table I ordered was canceled. Darren couldn’t have been easier to work with!

Can you believe they’re from target? I couldn’t believe the quality and weight of them.

Note: I made mine over- on the interior and changed out the hardware

(photo shows cabinet, but previous table and chairs)

So if you’re looking for a one of a kind piece that isn’t crap manufacturing (I have to say I was a big WE/PB fan, and their tables and furniture aren’t being manufactured to the same quality as years ago) try someone local to you to build you one custom- often for the same price. If you’re local to me I highly recommend Darren! If you have any questions- feel free to reach out! As always, thank you for stopping by and taking the time to read this.
