Outside Projects: Front Door Paint You Need In Your Life!
So here we are at the end of May and we’ve been in quarantine for over 2 months now… that went fast.
If you’re anything like me, the spring weather and the “stuck-at-home” nature of this pandemic in lower New York has me all about the house projects. If you follow me on instagram you probably saw that I can’t sit still so much so that I ventured to paint our white pool fence black… what a project that was.
Lately, I find myself saying “paint it black” as a solution to questions asked of me multiple times a week.
Our friend Becky and Tony’s front door makeover fell into that category. Tony’s a landscaper (Monaco Landscaping if anyone is local to Orange County, NY and looking beautiful pavers and landscaping to be done), and lately we’ve found ourselves bartering with one another on more than one occasion. He recently redid his front walkway with beautiful pavers for his wife and while he was showing us his work during a “social-distancing” camp fire one night, I made a comment in regards to his front door: “How come your front door isn’t black?”. His shutters are black and I felt like his white front door got lost to the beautiful landscaping of his front yard and his exterior lights just didn’t seem stately enough. It was then we decided to barter- exterior uplighting on the front of our house is something both Shad and I have always wanted. He’d help us out with the job and I’d “makeover” his entryway.
Here’s the before of their front door:
And the after:
The pictures speak for themselves: it’s amazing how much some black paint and alot of sweat (Becky can attest it was absolutely sweltering the afternoon I decided to paint it… she kept feeding me dirty banana drinks and icee pops) can really transform a place.
“The Details”
Products used:
I searched the internet for the best front door paint and came across this product that has tons of great reviews and available colors:
Best part about it: it dried super quick. So quickly that 10 minutes after I finished the 3rd coat, a thunderstorm rolled in and it literally POURED. The paint on the door was completely dry and it didn’t ruin at all. Note: I paid $34 total for the paint two weeks ago, the price literally changes a couple times a day, so check back to get it for a lower price.
Tools:
Painter’s tape, a drop cloth, a 2 inch paint brush + foam roller from Home Depot
How I applied it:
After washing down the door and letting it dry, I first applied the painters tape all around the door.
I started with the trim corners and intricate parts of the door then I used the foam roller for the larger parts of the door.
The paint dried each time within 15 minutes (despite the container saying an hour dry time.. it was a hot day though), and I applied 3 coats in total to cover the area.
